An online presentation of a talk by Geoff Rayner-Canham entitled “Dying for Work: Dangerous Trades for Women (1880s-1960s)”.This talk was given on 20 May 2025. Have you heard of: the pickling girls? The match girls? The canary girls? The porridge mixers? The radium girls? The calutron girls? These were some of the dangerous trades which women had to work. These horrifying accounts are brought together here for the first time. In addition, five of the individuals who fought for the rights and safety of these women workers and of the wider public: Alice Hamilton, Annie Besant, Grace Fryer, Joan Hinton, and Karen Silkwood are introduced.
