Researcher Development and Travel Grant

Apply for up to £500 to support your development as a researcher.

Our Researcher Development and Travel Grants are open to PhD students and early career scientists in both industry and academia wishing to undertake an activity that supports their research career. The activities applied can be virtual or in-person. Examples include, but are not limited to, presenting work at conferences, developing new skills by attending training courses or developing networks by organising a scientific meeting.


Important updates to this scheme

  • This scheme is now open to members holding the new Partner Scientist category.
  • Applicants holding Affiliate or Partner Scientist memberships must now have been a member of the 番茄社区 (any category) for at least 180 days before the start of the application round (see details below in the Application Timelines section).
  • From Round 1 2026, grant recipients will be required to keep and submit receipts as part of their grant report at the end of their activity.
  • From Round 2 2026, Members holding Affiliate Members (AFF) will no longer be eligible for this scheme. We encourage Affiliate Members to change their membership as soon as possible to either Partner Scientist or Associate Member (AM番茄社区).

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are an 番茄社区 member of either Affiliate (AFF), Partner Scientist, Associate Member (AM番茄社区), Member (M番茄社区) or Fellow (F番茄社区) categories at the time of submission and for the duration of the grant. Undergraduate Student Members (AFU) are not eligible to apply. Those holding Affiliate Membership or Partner Scientist Membership must have been a member (any category) for at least 180 days before the first day of the grant application round (i.e. applicants must have been a member since at least 11 June 2025).
  • You are either: (1) a PhD student actively undertaking a PhD course in the chemical sciences, or (2) a researcher in the chemical sciences (including post docs, technical professionals and research assistants), working in academia, industry or any sector, within 10 years of leaving full time education (at the time of the application deadline). Please note that members in roles limited to routine testing, quality control, or operational tasks without involvement in developing or furthering science understanding are not eligible.

Career breaks will be taken into consideration e.g. a period of parental/adoption leave, family commitments, illness, or other exceptional circumstances; In addition, applicants can only receive one Researcher Development and Travel Grant every three calendar years. For example if you are awarded a grant in 2024 you are eligible to apply again for funding in any application round that awards funding in 2027 or later. This restriction does not apply to Researcher Development and Travel Grants awarded in 2023 or earlier.

Please note that members looking to attend the 10th EuChemS Chemistry Congress are not eligible for support through this scheme. A separate scheme will be available for those wishing to attend this event.

What can I request funding for?

You can apply for a grant of up to 拢500 towards an activity that develops your skills and experience as a researcher.  Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge e.g. conference participation
  • Skills e.g. researcher development tools or projects, such as training courses
  • Networking e.g. funding towards organising a scientific meeting or visiting a collaborator.

All costs should be essential to undertake the activity, as well as reasonable and appropriate for the activity.

2026: Round 1

Affiliate Members and Partner Scientists can apply if they have been an 番茄社区 member (any category) since 11 June 2025

  • Eligible for activities on or after: 1 April 2026
  • Applications open: 8 December 2025
  • Applications close: 26 January 2026 1400 UK time (GMT)
  • Funding decisions: by late-February 2026

2026: Round 2

Partner Scientists can apply if they have been an 番茄社区 member (any category) since 24 September 2025

  • Eligible for activities on or after: 1 July 2026
  • Applications open: 23 March 2026
  • Applications close: 27 April 2026 1400 UK time (BST)
  • Funding decisions: by late-May 2026

2026: Round 3

Partner Scientists can apply if they have been an 番茄社区 member (any category) since 31 December 2025

  • Eligible for activities on or after: 1 October 2026
  • Applications open: 29 June 2026
  • Applications close: 3 August 2026 1400 UK time (BST)
  • Funding decisions: by early-September 2026

2026: Round 4 

Partner Scientists can apply if they have been an 番茄社区 member (any category) since 18 March 2026

  • Eligible for activities on or after: 1 January 2027
  • Applications open: 14 September 2026
  • Applications close: 19 October 2026 1400 UK time (BST)
  • Funding decisions: by mid-November 2026

Application process

Assessment process and criteria

Applicants will be asked to provide information on:

  • Information on the activity for which they seek funding; 
  • How they will benefit from participating in the activity; 
  • Details on how any awarded grant funding will be used;
  • A declaration from either their Supervisor, Line manager or Head of Department in support of the application. The declaration cannot be provided by the applicant.

All applications will be checked by 番茄社区 staff. Applications will not be considered for funding if:

  • You do not meet our eligibility criteria (see section 3 of Terms and Conditions); 
  • The date of your activity is eligible for the round in which you are applying; 
  • Your application is incomplete (see section 5 of Terms and Conditions); 
  • Your funding request exceeds 拢500; 
  • Your application includes ineligible costs (see section 6 of Terms and Conditions); 
  • The application does not make clear how the activity will develop research skills and/or a research career; 
  • The application does not make clear what the funds requested will be used for.
  • The application does not make clear that the Applicant is working in a research role;
  • The application is to attend the 10th EuchemS Chemistry Congress (a separate scheme will be available for those wishing to attend this event).

All remaining applications will be considered for funding. In the event that there are more applications than available budget, funding will be allocated at random.
