Biography
Ungyu Paik is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Energy Engineering at Hanyang University, Korea. His research interests are centered on the exploration and development of materials for advanced Li-ion batteries and next-generation energy storage systems. Based on a fundamental understanding of the physical and electrochemical properties of materials, his research has encompassed various aspects of advanced Li-ion batteries, particularly those designed for low-cost and sustainable energy devices.
To date, he has published over 500 papers and holds more than 200 granted patents and patent applications. His accomplishments in industry鈥揳cademia collaboration have been recognized with the Industry鈥揂cademia Cooperation Excellence Patent Award from Samsung Electronics (2024). Furthermore, he has maintained impactful partnerships with major industrial leaders, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDI, LG chemistry, and other global companies.
From 2017 to 2018, he served as the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea, where he directed national initiatives related to batteries, renewable energy projects, and sustainable energy policy. Through this role, he provided strategic leadership at the intersection of research, industry, and policy to advance the country鈥檚 energy sector, while also contributing to global efforts to address climate change.
