Solar fuels

Submissions now open

Deadline: 01 March 2026

This themed collection in Chemical Science, EES Solar, EES Catalysis, Sustainable Energy & Fuels and Energy Advances aims to showcase cutting-edge research and perspectives on the development and application of solar fuels as well as celebrating the impactful work shared at the 5th International Solar Fuels Conference (ISF) conference held in Newcastle, UK in September 2025.

Solar fuels production is the use of sunlight to drive the formation of high energy molecules (e.g. H2, CH3OH, NH3) from abundant feedstocks (e.g. H2O, N2, CO2). The field of solar fuels has the potential to deliver carbon free fuels and chemicals with applications ranging from energy storage, heating, transportation and manufacturing. This collection welcomes submissions related to the themes of ISF, including but not limited to:

  • Inorganic and organic photocatalysts and photoelectrodes
The discovery and study of inorganic materials and molecules, polymers, and organic molecules for light driven solar fuels and chemicals production

  • Electrocatalysis for sustainable fuels and chemicals
Advances in experimental and theoretical studies of electrocatalysis in integrated solar to X or power to X pathways. Including but not limited to water splitting, CO2 and N2 conversion

  • Biological and bioinspired solar fuels approaches
Biological systems, biohybrid systems and bioinspired systems

  • Advanced methods for the study and discovery of Solar to X materials
Approaches to discovery and mechanistic analysis, fundamental studies of existing materials to high throughput and digitally enabled discovery approaches

  • Devices to deployment
The science and engineering challenges around developing deployable devices and how they are measured/assessed

If you would like to contribute to this themed collection, you can submit your article directly to the journal's . Please quote our code 鈥淴XSolarF25鈥濃 in the 鈥楥omments to the Editor鈥 section when submitting your manuscript.

The Editorial Office reserves the right to check the suitability of submissions in relation to the scope of the collection and inclusion of accepted articles in the collection is not guaranteed. All manuscripts will be subject to the journal's usual initial assessment and peer review process. Accepted manuscripts will be added to the online collection as soon as they are online and they will be published in a regular journal issue.
